Microwave Oven or OTG – Which is the Best to Buy?

Microwave Oven or OTG - Which is the Best to Buy

A kitchen would definitely look incomplete without an OTG or microwave oven in it. But the big question has always been “which one to go for?”. Let us try to get to a valid conclusion with this microwave oven buying guide.

What is an OTG?

An Oven, Toaster, Grill is a miniature version of a traditional oven, to put it in simple words. Like traditional ovens, it can reheat food and can be used to grill, barbecue and bake. The heated coils in the OTG cook meals by converting the electrical energy into heat. This creates a high temperature for the food to bake.

What is a microwave?

The ‘Solo Microwave Oven’ is the basic kind of microwave that can only be used to defrost, reheat, and maybe cook little portions of food. But the Convection Microwave Oven combines the two technologies of a regular microwave and a convection oven. Therefore, it can be used to heat or defrost food, as well as cook and bake whatever you like.

Microwave Oven or OTG – Which one should you buy?

There are various factors that you need to consider before making a decision about whether to buy a microwave oven, or to go for an OTG. Here are a few examples.

The cooking method

Both the OTG and microwave oven use different technologies to cook. In OTG ovens, the heating coil radiates the heat that cooks the food. Additionally, a fan is present to make sure that heat is distributed. Microwave ovens, on the other hand, heat the water molecules present in food, thereby heating and cooking it. Hence, OTGs are better for baking, toasting and grilling while microwave ovens are efficient in defrosting and mild baking.

Defrosting and heating

The OTG oven is not perfectly equipped to defrost and reheat food. For defrosting and reheating, you need microwave ovens. Hence, depending on what you want for yourself, you can choose an OTG or a microwave oven.

Preheating time

An OTG Oven takes preheating time of about 15 minutes while a microwave oven takes only around 5 minutes to preheat. However, the temperature range of both a convection oven and an OTG are almost the same.

Heat distribution

In an OTG, the heating coil radiates the heat, but the heat is distributed with the help of a built-in fan. This makes the distribution of heat uneven and can thus bring out cookies that are unevenly browned. But a microwave oven has a fan that distributes the heat more evenly. This is effective in bringing out a consistent browning effect.

Capacity

An OTG might have a capacity up to 60 litres, whereas a convection microwave has a capacity of just 32 litres. Hence, for occasions when you need to cook large portions, an OTG is better suited.

Price

The average convection microwave oven costs more than an OTG oven. But that is compensated by the flexibility of microwave ovens that can cook, bake, as well as defrost and reheat.

Depending on their features, and your specific requirements, both the OTG and microwave oven can be helpful.
